The Swimming Pool & Spa Association of NSW (SPASA) has applauded the Deputy NSW Coroner’s call for more comprehensive swimming pool and spa testing laws. The call follows the Deputy Coroner’s recommendations this morning following the inquest into the drowning of an 11-year-old girl who became trapped in a spa suction outlet fitting

This morning the Minister for Local Government, Barbara Perry, put out a media release announcing stronger NSW swimming pool laws. The announcement relates to pool fences, with the requirement that all backyard swimming pools in NSW have a four-sided barrier, regardless of the size or the location of the property they are on.

Domestic swimming pool owners could be risking their health and personal safety – and breaching local council conditions – if they are prevented from topping up their pools, warns the Swimming Pool & Spa Association (SPASA) NSW. “Pools that are poorly maintained can create potential health risks for users,” explains SPASA President Manfred Wiesemes.
